Trio Restaurant at McMullen Creek Parkway and Hwy 51, opened in January, 1992, and was the 15th restaurant designed by Shank & Gray Architects, Charlottesville, Va.
Trio's mission is to serve quality food with friendly, efficient service in a beautiful environment. Teamwork and cooperation are emphasized in all areas. Managers serve as role models and it is the rule rather than the exception to see managers pitching in whenever needed in the kitchen, at the bar, and in the dining areas to be sure that customers receive prompt friendly service. Employees sometimes refer to their restaurant "family" and when employees or customers experience accomplishments or misfortune, they typically gather for celebration or support. Much of Trio's success is attributed to its tenure within management. Executive Chef James Bailey has been with the company since 1993, beginning as a dishwasher in high school. Chef John "Ryan" McCall has worked with the restaurant group for years at Charley's in Southpark and Mixx in Cotswold. He
rejoined the team at Trio in 2015 and is instrumental in menu development with fresh ideas and techniques. Ryan also manages Trio's off premise catering and delivery department. Assistant general manager Emma Crutchfield began as a Hostess in 2003 and works in the front of the house. Lisa Rockwell joined the company in 2008 as a server and has been a welcomed addition to the management team. Christopher Staggs worked for Trio as a cook when he was younger and has returned as a shift manager after working for some time in the pest control business.
Gary Robinson has been a Manager of the company since its opening in 1992. Gary has been with the organization dating back to the early 1980's. With his brother, David Robinson, they opened multiple locations of Charley's Restaurants for Prima Restaurant group throughout Virginia before bringing the concept to Charlotte in 1984. Subsequently, they opened Trio. Gary briefly
worked in the grocery business and then began his foodservice career at McDonald's in Charlottesville, VA. It was there he learned the importance of cleanliness, organization, and teamwork. Gary, or as some affectionately know him as, "Cutt", lives in South Charlotte with his wife Deb. If he is not at Trio you can find him at home enjoying his "yard time". He also is an avid fan of the University of Virginia and Carolina Panthers.
In December of 2021, a month before Trio's 30th anniversary, Gary and his son Charles "Dane" Robinson purchased all outstanding shares of the company from the original owners that included: Gary Robinson, David Robinson, Dick Shank, and others. Much of the success to this point is directly correlated to the leadership of Dick Shank and Gary Robinson.
Trio is now proud to be a 100% local family-owned establishment and a proud member of the South Charlotte community. As Trio looks to the future it will always strive to be a restaurant of consistency, friendly accommodating service, and a welcoming atmosphere.
